Hey all, I'm looking for your thoughts on building the best website.

My site:

has been up for quite some time, and has a minimum of traffic.  Now, I admit that I haven't done a whole lot with it, so I'm not expecting much.  I've lately added some more articles and made a few changes, so those might not have been crawled yet.

My real question is, am I making it too general?  I train both athletes and general clientele (eventually looking to ease down on the general clientele but they are the most lucrative at the moment).  My site covers both.  I'm working on my online consultation page, face-to-face training page, and bootcamp page, so they're hidden at the moment.

Would I be better off building an athletes' site and marketing that individually, and a more general client site and individually marketing it?  Or one big site?

Thoughts?

Besides the colors being more aggressive and probably not catering toward women the site just needs a facelift.

If you try to be a jack of all trades- even if you might be- you will find it harder to get certain clients.  So if you want to market a certain clientle then do just that.

Keep it simple and you will be better off that way.  That's my 2c and hopefully Dax will add his 10bux and set us straight.  :)

I definitely agree on the facelift.  The colors I can't do much about at this point.  It's through WebsiteWizard, and their templates are pretty weak.  They also lock users out of doing pretty much any substantial code.

I'm contemplating moving the site to another, freer host.

I feel that I need more pictures, etc.  Not too many, but there's just about none on the site.  I am in the process of getting some pictures of clients and I, that type of thing.

Thanks for the advice!

Hey Isaac

Yep, the site orientation is a bit... muddled.

There needs to be more WIIFM when you land, my friend. It should be clear what 'I' get from staying on your site rather than focusing on you as much.

Some pics will definitely help tto.

Hope this helps

I think part of it is just the exposure- getting your site out there.  And yes, the site does need more pictures.  Your blog actually appeals to the eye much more than the site does.  Also, I am a believer in specificity, but since yours is a site as a trainer, it would be beneficial for you to just emphasize the two parts more.

Let me know if that doesn't make sense for you.

My site, http://www.thathealthyperson.com, is still in the baby stages, but it may give you some ideas when I get it past that stage (by the end of the month or so).  That doesn't help you now, so for a better idea of a good set-up for a site with different pictures and clientele, take a gander at http://www.exerciseplace.org.

Hi Isaac,

To answer your question: you should have different landing pages, and ideally different sites that cater to each of your specific target markets. Think of it this way...when you do your offline and online (but offsite) marketing, you'll presumably using different tactics to drive each different target market to your site(s)....when you tell them to go to a specific site, they'll be expecting to see something relevant to their needs/problems instantly (the headline).

It is much more effective therefore to send each target market to a relevant site than a general massive site where it's not clear what's there for them, what's not and what their specific choices are.

I notice you're using wordpress for your blog - have you thought about using wordpress to build the site and integrating your blog right into it so you're not sending people off to different places?

The key to web (and blog) design is to design each page around getting the visitor to do one specific thing - don't give them too many choices (maximum 3), otherwise the chances are they'll just click off.

Whilst this may sound harsh I do think it'll help you in the long run...I'd totally overhaul the design of your site - separate it into individual ones for each of your target markets - or at least have very seperate sections of the site, perhaps even sub-domains (and while you're at it, you can use more keyword-specific domain names to improve SEO). You can then either integrate the blog into one of them or run the blog of your wilkinspower.com domain and use it to link and tie everything that you do together in one place.

And when it comes to images....use relevant images that enhance the copy. Don't just use images for the sake of them and have an inane picture of a green apple or something like that!!!

Hope that helps...
